How do you get to the top of Page One on Google? This is the holy grail for anyone with a website or blog, and it can seem like an impossible task. How on earth can your humble blog get the edge over all those other websites and blogs scrambling for the Number One spot?
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) can seem very complicated and it’s true that SEO content writing is a challenge – but there are some very simple SEO strategies that will help drive your website or blog up the search engine rankings.
1. INCLUDE IMAGES THE RIGHT WAY:
You’re probably already inserting images in your blog posts and articles – it’s a great idea to make your content more engaging and entertaining. But are you doing it the right way? Once you’ve found a relevant image, there are three things you need to do: change the image’s file name, title and alternate text to the keyword you’re aiming to rank for. This helps the search engine to understand what the image is about – and it means you may also be found by Google Image Search. If you’re using more than one image in a post, make sure you use different keywordsfor each one. You just need to come up with some other keywords that are relevant to the content and the images you’ve chosen. This is to avoid ‘stuffing’ your content with identical keywords – which amounts to ‘over-optimization’ and could get you into Google’s bad books.
2. KEEP YOUR PERMALINK SHORT:
When you write a post in WordPress, it will automatically generate a permalink or ‘url’ (the web address for the page) from the title you choose. If your title is quite lengthy, this will lead to a very long, unwieldy url, which won’t be much good for SEO. As Pat shows you in the video above, it’s very easy to edit your permalink – simply create an abridged version of your title, making sure you include the relevant keyword‘. It also helps if you can place the keyword as near to the beginning of the url as possible.
3. CREATE A FACEBOOK PAGE:
Simply go to Facebook Pageand create a page – it’s very quick and easy to do and well worth the effort. This helps boost your SEO because you’re linking in to Facebook’s own social media platform. An increasing amount of web search is now being done through social media. Once you’ve set up your page, be sure to include a link back to your website or blog.
4. CREATE A YOUTUBE CHANNEL:
Like creating a Facebook page, this is very simple to do – just hop along to YouTube and create a channel for your website or blog. Try to choose a name for your channel that matches your domain name as closely as possible. If you can make some short videos and embed them in your posts, this will really help to increase your blog’s credibility. You can also include links on YouTube back to your site. And in case you didn’t know, YouTube is actually owned by Google – so by integrating your blog with YouTube you’re helping to increase its overall authority and relevance for the particular keywords you’re aiming to rank for.
5. MAKE ALL AFFILIATE LINKS ‘NO FOLLOW’:
I know this sounds technical, but it’s really not that difficult – and it’s very important for SEO. You need to make sure that any affiliate links in your content are configured as ‘no follow’ links. This is to make sure that Google’s web crawlers ignore those links. Google will classify links to affiliate products, sales pages or CPA offers as ‘low quality’ links, so if they get ‘noticed’ by Google’s crawlers they can reduce your site’s rankings. I think the easiest way to add ‘no follow’ tags to your affiliate links is to use the Pretty Link plugin, as Pat demonstrates in the video above. This plugin makes it very simple to add the ‘no follow’ attribute to any affiliate links that you create.
If you want to make money from your blog, implementing these simple tips to improve your SEOwill give you a big advantage over a lot of the competition and a much better chance of reaching that coveted ‘number one’ slot!
