Running a successful home business is no easy task, especially if you are also holding down a full time job. Learning how to delegate your time and double your productivity can be very difficult. Sometimes it’s even harder if you do have all day because time can get away from you.
Here are 6 essential tips to double your productivity:
1. Keep a Notebook
I suggest keeping a notebook and jot down what tasks need to be accomplished each day. I usually write 3 to 5 things that I need to accomplish every single day. As you are working throughout the day, you may have an idea for an article, video, blog posts, whatever so jot it down real quick while it’s still fresh on your mind.
Some people chose to use a Word document or a calendar for these type of tasks but I have found that it a notebook is sitting right in front of you as you do your work, you are more likely to remember exactly what it is you need to accomplish throughout your day instead of some file on your computer that isn’t in front of you each minute. Try it, it works wonders.
2. Rid All Clutter
Ever heard the phrase that “a tidy office equals a tidy mind”? Well, it’s very true. People can get distracted by “things” sitting on or around their desks. Be sure that you rid all clutter in your work area so there is nothing to distract you from your work at hand.
3. Limit Emails
Emails are the most distractive interruptions throughout our day. It is recommended that you limit yourself to checking your email only twice a day. Don’t check your emails first thing in the morning because the next thing you know it’s an hour later and you haven’t accomplished one single thing. I check my emails during the lunch hour and then later in the afternoon. Do not keep your email programs open and you won’t be reluctant to check them so often.
4. The 80/20 Rule
80% of your time should be spent on working and 20% of your time should be spent learning. Most people find themselves reading emails, forum posts, blog posts, social networking posts, all the things that are not productive during your day. You should limit your time to 30 minutes on one site, 45 minutes on another site, whichever you find that produces the most results from your efforts. If you don’t see results from the sites or material you find yourself spending a lot of time on, stop doing it.
You can also learn a lot from signing up with different newsletters from top marketers. If you find that after a month you haven’t learned anything new, unsubscribe from their list and move on. You will find that you are just continuing to waste too much time on things you are not getting anything from.
5. Appointment Reminders
If you are working on the computer all day and you find that you have gotten busy and forgotten an important appointment, be sure to schedule that appointment on your calendar so a reminder will be sent to you. Or if you prefer setting a reminder for your cell phone, have it sent to you to remind you not to forget that particular appointment.
Eventually you will be at a place in your business where you are able to start outsourcing work. There is no need to take on every single roll when you are capable of outsourcing a good majority of it. You will eventually find that there are tasks that you just don’t enjoy or find that are a waste of your time. Hire someone to outsource this work to and free up your time so it is spent on more productive work.
I hope these 6 essential tips to double your productivity were helpful. Most people who start working from home don’t have a good handle on how to organize their day. Start by setting up an efficient business practice and you will find that you are becoming more and more productive with each passing day.
