How many times you have been the first one to appreciate others , just put your hand on your heart and ask yourself. You will surely get the answer.
Next question surely will be, why should I appreciate others and what will I get out of that?
Now imagine a situation of a person, who is putting all his efforts on something, maybe he is writing great code for others, and he is down and out as he is struck somewhere in the logic formation. You happen to pass by that person and seeing his effort, you just tell him “Man you have been working so hard, and I know, with your ability you will surely sail through this issue in which you are currently struck up”.
Believe me that can do wonders for the other person, inspire him and make him or her to move to next orbit. This has happened to me in my Last job wherein my Project Manager clearly told me the above while I was working on the Reporting tool to automate the Process of Reporting and was struck in one of the technical issue. After his statement I worked on the project the entire night without food and water and was able to solve the problem.
I always remember my Project Manager for his above appreciation, he has a SPECIAL place in my heart. Now I use the same tool of appreciating others and this has never ever failed.
I appreciate my team member who has really worked hard or performed exceptionally well, in front of entire team and in most of the cases I am the first one to appreciate.
When I appreciate the other person, the smile or the inner feeling of that person can be easily read on his face, SEEING that is believing. I feel that one good job has been accomplished.
Appreciation should be from the bottom of the heart and it should be genuine, fake appreciations can be easily caught. Appreciating does not lessen any dollar from your pocket .
I have also seen the reasons why some people are not appreciating others, I worked with one of the boss in my first job who really was very bad in that and reasons I could make out was firstly, feeling of insecurity. He was very much insecured of his job, he felt that appreciating others will surely put his job in danger. Secondly he has a belief that the other person during appraisals will place this appreciation on his list and ask for better increment.
Gradually the result of the above was, people who were working with him started to move out of his project, he lost some great developers from his team. His project started to suffer and after that you can think what must have happened.
At times our Sucking schedule and the tasks really does not allow us to do that but I genuinely make a point to appreciate minimum one person daily and so I expect you to do the same.
