A guide to writing a good short story.
Describing your characters before you start your story or book is very important. Make sure you get a notebook or a piece of paper and write down what your characters will look like. Write down hair color, skin color, eye color, etc. The idea is to make sure you have all of your characters described so you can look back in your notes for reference. Incase you forgot something and just so you have a clear thought of what your characters look like.
Picture your characters in your mind for a moment. What attitude will they have? You may want to jot that down as well. Does he or she have a sweet attitude, or an I want to kill you attitude? Is he or she going to end up being the murderer in your story? If so, you want to write down his or her actions, what may be said and how the situation will be taken care of. Attitude is important, and describing actions is important. Write down everything about your characters before you start your story.
Where will your story take place? Is it at an eerie estate? If so, write down exactly what the estate will look like. You want to describe the estate from top to bottom. Don’t leave out anything. You want to describe every crack on the outside of the estate. But, do not do this in your story. You may want to describe the estate through the eyes of your characters. You don’t want to say something like this. “We rode up to the eerie estate, it was eerie with darkness surrounding it. It had big cracks in the side of the building.” Describe it through the eyes of one of your characters, here’s an example. “Chris told me this place was creepy. It looks as though the big dark windows are eyes staring straight into your soul. The eerie dark cloud overhead just gives me the creeps.”
Write all of your ideas down on a piece of paper. So you don’t forget them. What if you had a wonderful idea for a story and you didn’t write it down, then forgot it? I bet it would make you angry, right? Carry a notepad with you everywhere you go. Inspiration for a story can hit you at anytime. You don’t want to miss out on creating a fabulous story that you’ll love!
Big Tip for Writing a Good Story
Just write! Never give up and keep writing all of your ideas down. You never know, your story may end up being a bestseller! You never know. After your story is complete, re-read it over and over again. Make any corrections that need to be made. You want your story to be wonderful and well written.
Tip for Writing a Good Story
You must read wonderful short stories. If you love to read, read some short stories. Read short stories from your favorite authors.
The Story Teller
Will your story be told in first-person (“I“), second-person (“you”) or third-person (“he” or “she”)? First: A character in your story will tell it. Second: A character in the story is made the reader. Third: A narrator tells the story.
After all changes have been made to your story, send it to a friend or loved one. Have him or her read over it and make sure all is well. If you’d like to hire an editor, then go for it. You want to make sure all punctuation, spelling and grammar is all correct. An editor will make sure of that.
If you submit your story for publication and it gets rejected, don’t beat yourself up about it. Move on, make corrections if the publisher asks you to do so. Then re-submit it. If it fails again, still don’t give up on writing completely. Rejection is part of being a writer. Keep practicing. Practice makes perfect. If you have a passion for writing, keep writing. The more you write, the better your writing will become.
