Love is one of the least understood emotions, and the most desirable.
Of course we have no way of measuring Love…
What do we have to compare it too? Hate, anger, jealousy, happiness, joy, peace, empathy, compassion, passion…emotions we feel every day, in some form or another, usually lasting minutes or hours. They are the result of minor or major interactions. Some we have no control over, some we instigate. But we can usually measure them, in either time or triviality. They pass eventully; we have to sit down and think it through, calm it down, or talk it out. Our capacity to resolve our differnces as beings that are inherently different from everyone else, each one of us unique, is astounding.
But then we encounter Love.
From the very first time we stood up, gathered in groups, tended fields, raised crops and kept animals, and possesed things we wanted to call our own, we have understood the reasons behind our emotions: the need to grow, to procreate, to survive, to win. Yet Love seems to have escaped all our best intentions to understand it. We can’t tell when it will happen: it can be a look, a touch, an image, a smell, a colour, anything at all. But it hits with the force of a wrecking ball, with the speed of light, and the certainty that it will change us forever. We can neither control it nor do we ever want to when it crashes into our lives. Once it takes root in our bones, it will never die, even when the body we carry around with us has withered and returned to dust. It is an energy with a power source unrivalled by any we dig or siphen from this earth. Most of our emotions are like fireworks. We light the fuse, they ignite, they rocket into the air, explode into a fabulous but brief display, then fizzle out and dissolve, and we wait on the next one. They are bright, powerful, colourful, noisy…we know what to expect, yet they continue to feel as new as the first time we saw them.
And then Love comes along, and we are lost for words!
It is an earthquake! It shakes the ground we have built our safe lives on, it rattles our foundations, moves our perspectives, and changes how we appreciate the small things we would have otherwise taken for granted. It is a magnificent feeling, it can amaze and surprise, set fire to our souls and heat our blood to boiling point, give us tunnel vision and visions of perfect clarity. It is a physical weight and yet cannot weigh us down. It gives us the ability to fly, to realise we can go places without leaving the ground. It gives us hope for everything, for our selves, our life, our dreams, that they actually could come true.
It is without equal, as unique to emotions as we are to the world, to life, to the unbelievable sequence of events that put us on this rock and let us live. Who could ever have imagined that a feeling could so baffle us yet be so precious to us. We spend our lives looking for that feeling, hoping that someday it will walk through our door, light up our lives, and give us a purpose we need never need to explain…we just say we are in Love.
It is immeasurable.
