Of the hundreds of SEO companies that are at large in the market, only a handful is any good. The others are in the business making to make a quick buck off the unsuspecting businesspersons availing their services in hope of higher website rank and traffic. It is hence not just important to spot a good SEO company, but also to rule out the bad ones.
Here are a few traits of bad SEO companies
1. They will agree to your demands without looking at your website.
Remember, you cannot guarantee that your client’s demand will be met unless the company takes a good look at your website first. This is because the design of your website determines how much work has to be done on it to achieve any given target. Only certain search engine friendly websites allow optimization at nominal rates. Some companies offer you the least possible service, and later blame it on the design of your website when things do not turn out to be well.
2. They Ask for Copyright to the content of Your Website.
This is inexcusable. Some companies end up asking their customers for copyright over the content they paid to get written. Copyright law of the land clearly states that if a person writes for an employer after being hired on an hourly or long term basis, then that person does not have any claim to the copyright. To this end, you yourself should have the copyright to any content that an SEO company gets written for you in course of its service.
3. They indulge in Internet Marketing Malpractices.
These are often called “grey hat” tactics by experts, and involve doing things that help you get to the top very soon, but only for a few days, after which your website is probably spoilt forever depending on what they do to it. There are several types of marketing malpractices. Here are two:
a. Unethical Link Building
This is basically providing thousands and thousands of back links to your website in a very small time to misguide the search engine into thinking that yours is a vast website. Although link building is crucial to the success of any SEO package, it should be done in a way that is permanent and ethical. Bad companies will buy links off other websites; pay others to build irrelevant links, use software to generate automated links and so on.
b. Irrelevant or Bad Web Content
This is something that is practised by more companies than you probably guess. Most companies will pay substandard writers to come up with inferior quality content that is all but relevant to what you are selling or offering. This would lead to the propagation of on-site keyword stuffing and off-site link building, but what people don’t understand is that contents such as these are often also read by customers, and this tends to severely hamper a firm’s reputation.
Carefully avoiding companies resorting to these tactics will keep your website safe and running for a long time.
