For many professionals, Thanksgiving is hardly a day of rest. Stories of big box stores opening on the holiday itself have sent many into a panicked tailspin – those people should be with their families!
But what happens if they don’t have family in town and would love the opportunity to work? What happens if they enjoy the extra holiday pay they earn that day?
And these people aren’t the only ones with work on their mind on a major holiday like Thanksgiving. Small business owners can’t seem to slip from work, even on the last day of rest before the madness of the holidays ensue, and on the first day of gluttony before all the Christmas treats start arriving on your desk.
Prepping for the Big Day
Before you sneak into your store on Thursday, there is plenty to consider. First, you have to decide exactly how you want to participate. See, to be successful on this big new shopping day, you can’t just set a sign out on the sidewalk outside your store. You need to have a plan in place.
Plan Your Digital Strategy Now
One of the ways you can save yourself from the hustle and bustle of getting ready on what’s meant to be a relaxing holiday is to start planning your digital strategy now. Here are a few things you can set up in the next few days to give you more relaxation time with family and friends on Thursday:
- Emails – If you’re anything like my family, you’ll be combing through emails to try to find where the deals are this weekend. Setup an automatic email to be sent out on Thursday or Friday to give those on your communication list a heads up that you will indeed be participating, and they will benefit from stopping by your shop.
- Social Media – Did you know that Twitter and Reddit are the two top used social media networks for finding local news? Start promoting your Small Business Saturday sales to your fans and followers so you can make the list of places to shop November 30.
- Website Promotions – Have you placed the badge of honor that you’re participating in Small Business Saturday on your website yet? Do it now, and wear it proudly. People look at that type of thing. It matters. With the badge proudly displayed on your digital channels, your new and returning website visitors may be more eager to support you this Saturday knowing you’re participating.
Plan to let your customers know about your sales when they’re planning out their shopping routes by preplanning your digital strategy to get in front of the right people at the right time.
If you’re not participating this year, then hit the pavement and start supporting the small businesses in your area! You never know, you may land on something pretty great that you never realized was just around the corner.
