Basic SEO knowledge says that websites must have keywords appropriate to their business on their website in order to rank higher on the search engine results. While this is not new knowledge, there are still plenty of companies who are making mistakes when selecting and bidding on the keywords they choose.
What can you do to update your keywords and get in front of the eyes of your prospective customers?
Here are three keyword mistakes to be conscious of when creating your marketing plan:
- Too much focus on singular word searches – The market is smart. People have now been searching for long enough on search engines to know that they need to use detailed searches in order to get the best results. Instead of using single search terms, such as “seafood” or “restaurant”, try expanding your terms to be a phrase people will actually use, like “best seafood restaurant in Tucson”.
- Putting too much emphasis on highly competitive search terms– When you use highly competitive phrases, you are competing with the companies who have large websites that have been around for far longer than yours. Before attempting to overtake large competitors in SEO results, go after the less competitive words and phrases. These will still award you with qualified traffic. Even though fewer people are searching for those words, you will likely get more traffic from these since you will rank higher, faster.
- Not using keywords people are searching for – Marketing terms that define customers are not quality keywords. Think of how you phrase your personal searches for products outside your market. Do you use a question when you search, or look for ‘best of’ or ‘product x vs. product y’? Your customers are doing the same. Put yourself in the customer’s shoes and use the phrases they are searching for on your website.
SEO does not have to be a challenge, but it can feel overwhelming for some. Try doing your own searches to find which keywords get a lot of hits vs. the ones that are less competitive. Aim your marketing efforts after the less competitive keywords, and your website will see not only more traffic, but more qualified traffic.
