SEO is one of the hottest marketing industries and buzzwords in the first era of true digital marketing. As commerce has turned more and more into an online activity, SEO tactics have become the focus of marketing departments seeking eyeballs in Google’s search rankings.
But in spite of the mathematical look SEO analysis and execution has, the fact remains that we are constantly seeking to hit a moving target. There are always new ways to create SEO opportunities because web tools are always changing and evolving.
And there are always underground SEO tips.
Underground SEO tactics present ideas that aren’t being implemented by many of the mainstream SEO firms currently in operation. Remember, SEO is hot. And when markets get hot, they have the potential to bubble. If the SEO bubble bursts, it’s going to take more than snagging a few links or jamming keywords into your pages or even displaying a nice SEO report to get and keep customers.
Besides, new SEO tactics help you succeed. And some underground SEO tactics are useful to teach you about yourself, while other underground SEO tactics teach you about some of your not-so-nice competitors.
Ready to learn? Here they are.
1. Reverse SEO
This is pretty nasty, but I’ve heard rumors of companies simply trying to drive down the search rankings of competitors. I don’t know 100% of the tactics out there, although I can think of a few (calling out competitors for poor practice as well as using anchor text that makes no sense and linking from weak websites… maybe?). What I do know is that you don’t hear a lot about it, but it most certainly happens. Reverse SEO is one of the only underground SEO tactics that involves an offensive strategy.
2. Popularizing Search Terms
This SEO tactic is being released for the first time, here and now. Make your own keywords by popularizing your targeted search terms. In other words, instead of riding the wave of popularity of other terms, create and popularize ideas. Be the Steve Jobs of SEO by showing people things they haven’t seen and drawing them to you. Then hype up the search term and always get there first.
3. SEO News Jacking
News jacking means to insert yourself into a preexisting news story and ride the wave of publicity. In SEO terms, this would have been like leveraging Gangham Style or the Harlem Shake by putting in “Houston Harlem Shake”. Or, if you want to insert a PR element into it, coming out and making a comment via optimized press release that establishes a news cycle and ranks articles for the long term. This is generally more of a PR tactic than SEO tactic, but it still makes our list because of its obvious SEO value.
4. Preemptive Camo
This is a really interesting concept for anyone interested in reputation management or personal libel protection on the net.
Let’s say you’re Justin Bieber. If you don’t want people to Google “bieber sucks” and find the text of the people who talk badly about you, you could just as easily release a statement that says, “Dictatorship Sucks.” Then the press that picks you up will quote you, and those are the articles that will probably come up when people Google you using a hateful phrase.
In other words, it hides the dirt and the mud.
There are those who claim they simply create a great site and the traffic comes with it. Naturally, anything truly great should succeed on the open market— in theory.
Naturally though, the most underground SEO tactic is to hardly do SEO at all.
What SEO tactics do you use that aren’t common on the open market?
